President Trump has declared Jerusalem as the “undivided capital of Israel”, delivering a big win to both evangelicals AND ISIS and other terrorist groups. Evangelicals have long-held that Jerusalem should be designated as the capital of Israel and oppose a two-state solution, with Vice-President Mike Pence, himself an evangelical, most likely serving a key role in the president’s decision (you can see him standing over the President’s shoulder as he signs).
Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, the US’ chief diplomat, and Defense Secretary George Mattis, as well as the CIA, all opposed the decision to move the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.
Already, the decision has placed American lives at risk with the U.S. Consulate in Jerusalem issuing a security warning for American and US Government officials to avoid the Old City and the West Bank prior to the announcement. The State Department has also issued a “Worldwide Caution” following the decision.
Palestinian leaders were more than quick to respond, declaring three “days of rage” ahead of the announcement. Widespread demonstrations have also erupted throughout the Gaza Strip and a Palestinian refugee camp in Beirut, Lebanon. Protests all across the Middle East have grown in solidarity.
World leaders have also been quick to respond, with Pope Francis saying:
“Jerusalem is a unique city, sacred to Jews, Christians and Muslims, where the Holy Places for the respective religions are venerated, and it has a special vocation to peace…. I pray to the Lord that such identity be preserved and strengthened for the benefit of the Holy Land, the Middle East and the entire world, and that wisdom and prudence prevail, to avoid adding new elements of tension in a world already shaken and scarred by many cruel conflicts.”
The top diplomat for the European Union is also on record saying that the Middle East peace process is about to descend to “even darker times”. President Erdogan of Turkey, one of the US’ strategic, if not fickle, allies in the region also went on record saying that President Trump’s decision throws the region into a “ring of fire”.
Another important US ally in the region, Saudi Arabia, also issued a warning to Trump with Saudi Arabia’s King Salman telling Trump over the phone that “Moving the U.S. Embassy is a dangerous step that provokes the feelings of Muslims around the world.”
Arab leaders have also said that Trump’s announcement will only fuel extremists and terrorist groups like ISIS, who will use the decision to recruit and carry out missions. The militant group Hamas has already called for an uprising.
This recent episode only goes to show that President Trump has poor judgment and lacks the experience and qualifications to be president. How long will America endure?
