A Super Stay: Omni Royal Orleans Hotel in New Orleans, Louisiana

This Thanksgiving, I embarked on a road trip from Portland, Maine, to Fort Worth, Texas. Along the way, I explored the East Coast and Southeast, stopping in North Carolina, the Blue Ridge Mountains, and Alabama before reaching my favorite pit stop: New Orleans, a city steeped in history and culture.

Some Context

Founded in 1718 by French colonists, New Orleans grew into a bustling port city thanks to its strategic location near the mouth of the Mississippi River. Over time, it became a melting pot of French, Spanish, African, and Caribbean influences, shaping its unique architecture, music, and cuisine. Today, the city is known for its vibrant French Quarter, lively festivals like Mardi Gras, and rich cultural heritage, making it a must-visit destination for travelers.

Nestled in the heart of the French Quarter, the Omni Royal Orleans Hotel was the perfect place to recharge, thanks to a deal I scored through Super.com, my go-to app for travel bargains.

First Impressions

From the moment I arrived, the service stood out. Though I didn’t use valet parking, the valet team went above and beyond, taking my bags, offering directions, and even flagging down a parking spot for me. Check-in was smooth, with staff who were both professional and welcoming.

My room was cozy and ideal for a one-night stay. While the space was charming, the bathroom could use an upgrade—modern amenities are something I always look for when booking hotels. Still, the hotel’s historic vibe and unbeatable location more than made up for it.

Dining at the Rib Room

For dinner, I dined at the Rib Room, the hotel’s on-site restaurant. Here’s my quick breakdown:

  • Gumbo: A bit bland—unfortunately, not the Cajun flavor I’d hoped for.

  • Caesar Salad with Salmon: Satisfying but nothing extraordinary.

  • Old Fashioned Cocktail: Classic, but it didn’t stand out.

That said, the dining staff were excellent. They gave me the space I needed to catch up on emails and family calls without unnecessary interruptions.

Exploring the French Quarter

Staying in the French Quarter is an unforgettable experience. This historic neighborhood is the oldest part of New Orleans and serves as the cultural heart of the city. Its streets are lined with iconic wrought-iron balconies, colorful townhouses, and gas-lit lanterns that exude old-world charm.

The French Quarter is home to landmarks like Jackson Square, the St. Louis Cathedral, and the French Market, a vibrant hub for local goods and food since the 18th century. At night, Bourbon Street comes alive with music, from jazz to blues to zydeco, spilling out of the many bars and clubs that line the strip.

For me, as someone who values inclusivity, the LGBTQ+ spaces in the French Quarter made my visit even more special. Bars like Café Lafitte in Exile, the oldest continuously operating gay bar in the U.S., offer a welcoming atmosphere and a sense of community.
